ADB Construction Company History
Albert Dean Blazevic formed ADB Construction in 1970. Al began his career in the mid 1950’s as a cement finisher with Jesco Concrete and Masonry where he worked until the late 1960’s. He then ran work for various general contractors until starting ADB Construction.
ADB began as a small tenant improvement, demolition-style concrete contractor with one concrete crew that did small masonry projects also. Work was primarily small commercial with tenants such as the Brookdale Shopping Center as a main client. In the mid 1970’s Al’s two sons, Barry and Nick, began working in the business as laborers. After finishing Union Apprenticeships, Barry as a Bricklayer and Nick as a Cement Finisher, Al was able to begin expanding the business. Al’s philosophy was one of growing slowly as his good clients grew their businesses.
Through the late 1980’s ADB Construction began doing somewhat larger projects in municipal, retail, gas station and C-store operations. Barry ran the field Masonry Operations and Nick ran the field Concrete Operations. ADB grew into multiple crews but still kept the philosophy of small business with the personal touch.
In the 1990’s, as Al began to step away from the day-to-day operations of the Company, ADB took another step and added Steve Schahn as the Head Estimator and Project Manager. With Steve’s ability to bid and sell projects, the Company was able to increase the volume of work, which enabled us to become more of a year-round employer and to keep more of our key employees working through the winter. We have since retired numerous employees that may have begun their careers elsewhere but finished them with ADB. We also have several families employed by ADB that have multiple generations working for us.
Barry and Nick have begun to give back to the Industry as they were given. ADB is a member of the Minnesota Concrete and Masonry Contractor’s Association, Barry was President in 2002 and has served on its board for many years. Barry is also serving as a Trustee on the Bricklayers Vacation Fund and Delinquency Board. Nick has served as a Trustee on the Cement Finishers Apprenticeship Board and has stayed involved with the continually changing world of concrete construction.
